Vashistha cave is devoted to a great sage Vashistha, one of the Saptarishis in ancient India. The Rishi Vashistha is observed as manas Putra of Lord Brahma and the Guru of Lord Ram. The cave is approximately 25 km from “the world capital of yoga” Rishikesh (and very near Shivpuri). It is believed that Vashistha Rishi meditated here for a long time. This cave is meant as a beautiful place of meditation in Rishikesh, and many peoples coming to this place for meditation purposes.
According to Hindu mythology, after the death of all the children of sage Vashistha, he decided to take his life by drowning himself in the river Ganga. But, goddess Ganga refused to let him die. Then, Vashistha meditated here for a long time, and with passing time, his small ashram was developed into a cave which Swami Purushottam and Society now manage. The location is alluring, beside the Ganga river, in which pilgrims can take a dip and spend time sitting on the river banks while enjoying the cold flow of water.
Vashistha Cave, A dark, long cave that has been adequately maintained, and people keep sitting on the floor. The feeling of being inside the cave will leave you tongue-tied and high-spirited. The Vashistha Cave is an ideal location for meditation. If you decide to go there, it is advisable to carry a torch in the cave, as the illumination by the mobile phone’s light may be inadequate. Very peaceful place, and just sitting there quietly for 10-15 minutes rejuvenates the mind. There is an ashram, and sometimes rooms can also be booked.
